Opportunity

Paxwood Acoustics is growing and seeking a full-time Acoustical Consultant. The position involves working on a wide range of noise control and environmental permitting and compliance projects, including sound measurement planning and execution, acoustic modeling and data analysis, and technical report preparation. This role requires occasional to regular out-of-state travel for fieldwork and participation in public meetings.

Responsibilities

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Planning and conducting fieldwork, including sound level and meteorological measurements in accordance with industry standards across the U.S.
  • Analyzing acoustical data using Excel, sound level meter software, and other technical tools (e.g. R, Adobe Audition, VBA, Python, Matlab).
  • Building and analyzing sound propagation models to assess compliance with applicable standards and project goals.
  • Managing and manipulating spatial and tabular data using GIS tools for mapping and modeling analyses.
  • Developing practical noise mitigation recommendations to help clients comply with regulations and meet project goals.
  • Interacting and consulting with clients, colleagues, and collaborators.
  • Preparing graphics, tables, and maps for reports and presentations.
  • Authoring technical reports and correspondence.
  • Researching and reviewing relevant technical information and standards.
  • Presenting technical information and answering questions at public meetings and conferences.
  • Assisting with administrative and operational tasks as needed.

Preferred Qualifications

Experience & Education

  • 3-8 years of experience in an acoustical consulting environment.
  • Bachelor’s degree in acoustics, engineering, physics, mathematics, or a related field.
  • Interest in working toward INCE Board Certification.

Technical Skillsets & Knowledge

  • Experience with ISO 9613-2 modeling software (e.g., CadnaA or SoundPLAN).
  • Experience in geospatial and/or CAD software (e.g., ArcGIS or AutoCAD).
  • Experience conducting acoustical fieldwork and sound level measurements.
  • Experience in acoustical data analysis and modeling.
  • Ability to develop actionable recommendations for noise reduction.
  • Experience programming or data analysis using R, VBA, Python, or Matlab.

Consulting Skillsets & Knowledge

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word and Excel.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to manage work across multiple projects and prioritize tasks effectively.
  • Ability to work independently and follow through on assignments.
  • Ability to collaborate within a multidisciplinary project team.
  • Strong organizational skills for managing digital and physical work environments.
  • High ethical standards, including maintaining confidential information and professional integrity.

Physical Requirements

The candidate must be able to:

  • Possess a valid driver’s license, vehicle insurance, and vehicle registration.  
  • Travel by car and plane for fieldwork or meetings.
  • Walk a minimum of one mile over a difficult terrain carrying equipment.
  • Lift and carry up to 50 pounds.
  • Work outdoors in a variety of weather conditions, day or night, year-round.
  • Work at a computer for extended periods.
  • Communicate regularly with colleagues and clients.

Location

This is a remote position within the contiguous United States. A candidate located in the Northeast, within two hours of a major airport, is preferred. Paxwood Acoustics will provide office equipment and software necessary to conduct the required tasks, but the candidate must keep and maintain a remote work environment suitable for efficient business activities including high-speed internet access.
