The Graduate Program in Acoustics at The Pennsylvania State University invites applications for a tenure-line faculty position in acoustics starting in Fall 2023. The position is open at the Assistant Professor level, although exceptionally well qualified applicants at all levels may be considered. The Program seeks candidates with research and teaching expertise in acoustics from any sub-discipline. Excellent candidates in the fields of transducer design, piezoelectrics, and at the intersection of acoustics and data science are strongly encouraged to apply. However, all candidates will be evaluated equally, regardless of focus area within acoustics, in order to seek the strongest candidate regardless of specialization.
The Graduate Program in Acoustics enjoys an excellent international reputation as the only civilian graduate-degree-granting program in Acoustics in the U.S. The program currently has 7 full-time faculty members and more than 50 affiliated faculty members from across Penn State who contribute to the missions of teaching, research, and service. The Program offers the M.Eng., M.S., and Ph.D. degrees in acoustics. There are over 50 resident Acoustics graduate students at the University Park campus, and over 100 students who are seeking M.Eng. degrees through the distance learning option. Penn State Acoustics also maintains a strong relationship with the http://www.arl.psu.edu/, a university center of excellence in defense science, systems, and technologies with a focus on naval missions and related areas. The Acoustics Program also supports the http://www.cav.psu.edu/ that serves as a base for technology transfer to industry in the many sub-disciplines of acoustics and vibration. Penn State Acoustics faculty members are also involved with the https://www.mri.psu.edu/, the https://www.huck.psu.edu/, the https://iee.psu.edu/, the https://www.imaging.psu.edu/, or have collaborations with the https://med.psu.edu/. The University is one of the nation's leaders in industry-sponsored research, with partnerships with over 400 companies on an annual basis.
Qualifications: Applicants must have an earned doctorate in Acoustics or equivalent in engineering, science, or closely related areas. Candidates will be expected to engage in graduate level instruction both in the fundamentals of acoustics and in their area of expertise. In parallel, all candidates are expected to establish an externally funded research program, support and advise graduate students, and to publish in high quality academic journals.
