The Noise Team works hard to strike a balance between sound-generating activities related to construction and special events, and the desire for livable communities. The Noise Program helps set the tone of the city.

In the last few years, the Noise Program has worked to support big community events like the Portland Marathon and the Blues Festival, built a cross-sectional group to address the impact of car racing on our neighborhoods, helped reintegrate live music into Portland’s night life as the pandemic restrictions loosened, and championed health and safety measures like the ban on gas powered leaf blowers.

The Noise Program supports Portland's lively spirit, livability, and health by:

  • Maintaining and enforcing the City's Noise Ordinances,
  • Supporting developers and event planners in applying for the noise code variances that keep the city bustling and growing, and
  • Managing the Noise Review Board, a community and industry body that provides direction to the program and City Council.

The Noise Coordinator is a core part of the Noise Team. This is a highly collaborative position on a small four-person team. The job requires excellent communication, attention to detail, and a desire to be a part of a skilled, small team.

The Noise Coordinator is responsible for the majority of programmatic work, including:

  • Variance program - reviewing, issuing, and tracking applications, updates and payments through an online database system (Amanda),
  • Public communication - updating the website, collaborating with the bureau's communications team on outreach,
  • Customer service – support community in applying to the variance program and navigating the needs of multiple program partners,
  • Administration - reconciling deposits, maintaining and updating systems, monitoring performance goals, and supporting the Noise Review Board.
