Senior Acoustical Engineer

Acoustical Engineers at Dell lead the development of innovative hardware, software, and business solutions to meet the acoustical needs a broad base of Enterprise IT solutions that serve AI, Machine Learning, Edge, Telco, Cloud, HPC and many other applications.  Our multidisciplinary team conducts the analysis and feasibility studies for new and existing products in server, storage, cloud, and at the edge.  We also engage directly with leading technology partners to drive innovation into custom and standardized components to meet our customers’ needs.

What you’ll achieve

Working alongside a team of thermal and mechanical engineers you will contribute to industry leading solutions that enable our customers to do more.  You will help define the acoustical experience of millions of products that are deployed from home office desks to retail counters to data centers and even street corners.  You will design and test innovative solutions for acoustical and vibration noise control.  You will ensure that the latest HDD technology, increasingly sensitive to external noise, can be deployed where customers need it most.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Implement Dell’s acoustical and HDD Dynamics strategy in Dell’s Core Hardware Portfolio during early product development stages.
  • Define the acoustical experience and HDD Dynamic solution for individual Dell platforms from early concept phases to transition into development.
  • Develop test plans, source hardware, specify acoustical solutions, align test schedules, and deliver regular status updates to a multidisciplinary team of engineers and project managers. Analyze acoustical and vibration data for various sound quality and vibration metrics.
  • Work with component suppliers and Dell component teams to develop new technology and ensure individual components, and individual component specifications, meet Dell’s platform acoustical and vibration requirements.
  • Validate new products features against platform acoustical specifications and customer use cases.

Essential Requirements

  • Strong fundamental understanding of acoustics and vibration
  • Experience measuring sound pressure and acceleration with microphones and accelerometers
  • Project and time management skills
  • Ability to communicate clearly through the use of collaboration tools: email, Microsoft Teams, Microsoft PowerPoint, and verbal discussion.
  • Ability to document status, challenges, assumptions in a cohesive and accessible way

Desirable Requirements

  • A minimum of a master’s degree in mechanical engineering (or equivalent) with a focus in acoustics
  • 3+ years of experience with fan acoustics or rotating machinery acoustics.
  • Experience with ArtemiS SUITE from HEAD Acoustics and Acoustical simulation in ANSYS.
