Session Titles and Descriptions for NoiseCon 2007
Technical Activity 12.0: Policy and Standards
12.1 Engineering Noise Controls in the Mining Industry: Regulatory Incentives and Noise Control Solutions to Reduce Mine Worker Noise Exposures
- Go back
Organizers: R. J. Matetic, Pete Kovalchik
The 1999 Mine Safety and Health Administration's rule for Occupational Noise Exposure has provided an opportunity for the mining industry to renew efforts to develop effective noise control solutions for mine equipment. The renewed emphasis on noise control in mining resulted from the disallowance of hearing protection when determining a mine worker's exposure. This session provides information related to the development and the impact of a Program Information Bulletin (PIB) 04-18, entitled “Technologically Achievable, Administratively Achievable, and Promising Noise Controls (30 CFR, Part 62)” along with several papers addressing the development of noise control technologies in reducing workers exposure to noise in the mining industry.
12.2 Workshop on Noise Policy -- Engineering Education - Go back
Organizers: William Lang, George Maling
The third National Noise Policy Workshop will be held on during NOISE-CON 2007 in Reno, NV. The theme of this workshop is "U.S. Education in Noise Control Engineering." The implementation of noise policy depends on the education of noise control engineers in America. The workshop will feature morning and afternoon sessions with presentations by panelists from academia and industry. The panelists from academia will describe the course offerings and research at their institutions and the current demand for noise control engineers in the public and private sectors. They will assess the capability of higher education to supply these specialists. The panelists from industry will describe their role in reducing noise, the educational requirements for a successful industrial career, and industry demand for noise control engineers.
At the end of each session a question-and-answer discussion period among the presenters and members of the audience will focus on the theme of the workshop.
